Pertanyaan sudah kita menyangkal diri adalah pertanyaan yang seringkali menggugah hati disaat posisi berada dizona nyaman. Hal ini dapat disebabkan oleh “segala sesuatu yang telah kita miliki” dapat menjerat kita kepada kehidupan yang orientasinya hanya kepada kesenangan diri sendiri. Sebagai umat Kristen, kita seharusnya menghilangkan hal tersebut dalam setiap perjalanan hidup sehingga terdapat sebuah perbedaan antara pengikut Kristus dengan orang-orang duniawi dan ini hanya dapat terjadi jikalau umat mewujudnyatakan penyangkalan diri disepanjang perjalanan kehidupannya.

Di tengah beragamnya isi Alkitab terdapat banyak contoh penyangkalan diri disaat mereka berada di dunia. Paulus adalah salah satu Rasul yang telah menjadi contoh dalam penyangkalan diri tersebut. Ia yang dahulunya mengambil peran sebagai pemburu umat Kristen menjadi pribadi yang luarbisa dalam Tuhan. Hal ini terjadi disaat ia mengalami perjumpaan dengan Tuhan Yesus Kristus sewaktu dalam perjalanannya menuju kedamsyik. Perjumpaan itu menjadi awal dari perubahan hidup Paulus sehingga ia dapat menjadi contoh pribadi yang dapat menyangkal diri di setiap proses pejalanan kehidupan.

Mengenai Penyangkalan diri, hal ini sejatinya telah diungkapkan oleh Tuhan Yesus Kristus diwaktu ia bersama dengan murid-muridnya. Kata-Nya kepada mereka semua: “Setiap orang yang mau mengikut Aku, ia harus menyangkal dirinya, memikul salibnya setiap hari dan mengikut Aku (Luk 9:23). Ungkapan penyangkalan diri tersebut tidak hanya keluar dari ucapan Tuhan Yesus Kristus melainkan ia juga memberikan contoh dirinya kepada semua muridnya dengan memperlihatkan pejalanan hidup sampai dikayu salib dan contoh inilah yang membuat Paulus dapat melakukan penyangkalan diri dengan baik dan memproleh perkenanan di hadapan Allah.

Sebagai umat Tuhan tentulah sudah seharusnya kehidupan kita sesuai dengan apa yang diinginkan oleh Tuhan. Keinginan ini tidak menunjukan bahwa Tuhan adalah sosok yang sangat egois, yang semuanya harus terjadi sesuai dengan yang dikehendakinya, melainkan hanyalah berorientasi kepada kebaikan kita semata. Inilah kasih yang tulus itu, dimana sang pelaku kasih melakukan kasih bukan untuk kepentingan diri sendiri melainkan untuk kepentingan objek yang dikasihinya, dan seharusnya ini tidak hanya dilakukan oleh Tuhan saja, melainkan juga dilakukan oleh kita kepada sesama dan terlebih kepada Tuhan sang pencipta segala yang ada.

Kasih memiliki peranan penting dalam mewujudnyatakan penyangkalan diri di setiap pejalanan hidup kita. Ia akan memperbaiki pribadi kita, dan hubungan terhadap sesama.
