Manusia merupakan pribadi yang telah berdosa oleh karena pelanggaran yang telah dibuat sepanjang perjalanan hidupnya. Keinginan untuk menjadi seperti Allah telah membuat Adam dan Hawa terpisah dari Allah. Manusia sampai pada saat ini mewarisi dosa keturunan dari Adam tetapi manusia pilihan Allah telah menjadi merdeka oleh karena pengorbanan Yesus Kristus diatas kayu salib. Manusia pilihan Allah akan terus menerus mengalami perubahan melalui karya Roh-Kudus dalam kehidupannya.
Kedaulatan pertama yang terdapat pada Roma 8:29-30 adalah pilihan Allah. Pilihan Allah ini dilakukan berdasarkan kedaulatan Allah memilih umat-Nya sejak semula bukan berdasarkan kebaikan atau kelebihan yang lain yang dimiliki oleh orang-orang pilihan Allah. Allah memilih umat-Nya melalui kebijaksanaan. Allah memilih umat-Nya berdasarkan kesempurnaan yang ada pada diri-Nya. Manusia hanya sosok yang mendapatkan cinta kasih dari Allah sehingga dipilih untuk menjadi umat Allah yang memuji, menyembah, dan melakukan segala perintah-Nya.
